LSE-Cambridge-Oxford Spring Dinner, 15 May, 2019

The three alumni societies of our illustrious universities held their annual Spring Dinner on Wednesday, 15 May, 2019 in the magnificent surroundings of the gardens of the Residence of the Dutch Ambassador to Luxembourg, Han-Maurits Schaapveld, who is an alumnus of LSE. The venue is of particular interest as Jean Monnet lived there from 1953 to 1955. It was LSE’s turn to organise the Dinner, and we all very much appreciated the generosity of the Ambassador. The location undoubtedly contributed to the large numbers taking part, a total of 80 persons with about one third from the Cambridge Society. The American Ambassador and his wife also attended the Dinner.

Following an apératif, an excellent meal was served in the marquee. A highlight was the excellent white wine served with the starter, it was the first time that many of the guests had tasted wine from the Netherlands! An Auxerois-Pinot Gris blend, it was very good indeed. Another example of the generosity of the Ambassador!

We were fortunate with the weather which was clear and dry. Gas heaters in the marquee kept off the chill of the evening, although some of the ladies had wisely taken the precaution of bringing a shawl, jacket or cardigan with them.

All in all this was a most successful evening, enabling the alumni of the three universities to mix in a most congenial setting. Next year it will be Oxford’s turn to organise the dinner. They have a hard act to follow!!
